TWO Birmingham fire stations are offering electric blanket safety checks as winter approaches.

West Midlands Fire Service is working with the Electrical Safety Council to find faulty blankets at Erdington Fire Station on Tuesday, September 30, and at Sutton Coldfield Fire Station on Wednesday, October 1.

Dangerous blankets cause one in ten deaths in household fires that are started by electrical appliances.

They will be given the once-over by qualified electric blanket testers and repaired, if appropriate.

Worn, old and potentially dangerous electric blankets will be replaced, free of charge, by the Electrical Safety Council.

Last winter nearly 70 per cent of the blankets tested on behalf of the Electrical Safety Council were found to have safety issues.

"If your electric blanket is more than 10 years old we would advise that it be replaced," a spokesman said.
